Batch process PDFs

Do the same job to a whole folder of PDFs in one go, with a report of what happened — and your original files left untouched.

Choose files and operations; results go to a folder you choose, with a report.

Batch processing

Batch → Batch process applies the same operations to every file you add, in this order:

  • rotate pages;
  • add a watermark;
  • add page numbers;
  • add Bates numbers that continue across the files;
  • clean metadata;
  • flatten form fields;
  • compress.

Results go to a folder you choose, named with a pattern such as {name}-processed, and you decide what happens if a file already exists. Each output is written to a temporary file and renamed only after it succeeds, and a report file lists the result for every document. Source files are never modified.

Apply the same operations to many files at once. Your originals are never modified.

Bates numbering across a set of files

For legal and compliance work, Advanced → Legal & Bates numbers a whole set of PDFs continuously, with your prefix, suffix, starting number and number of digits, and pages to skip. Preview numbering shows the first and last number of every file before anything is written. Pagewright saves a CSV or JSON manifest of the numbers, and if numbering is interrupted, Resume finishes it with the same numbers. It can also combine the set into one bundle with separator sheets and bookmarks.

Removing Bates numbers that another tool stamped is not offered; number again from the originals instead.

Automate recipes

Advanced → Automate saves a sequence of steps — for example OCR, metadata cleanup, page numbers, watermark, Bates and compression — as a recipe. A dry run shows what would happen without writing files, recipes can be exported and imported, and interrupted runs can be resumed.

Compare two PDFs

Compare shows two documents side by side with synchronized scrolling and lists the differences in their text, with a visual difference view — useful for checking a batch result against the original.

In this group

  • Batch processing. Rotate, watermark, add page numbers or Bates numbers, clean metadata, flatten forms or compress many files at once. Results go to a folder you choose, with a report; your originals are untouched.
  • Bates numbering across a set of files. Number a whole set of PDFs continuously, preview the first and last number of each file, and save a CSV or JSON manifest. Interrupted runs resume with the same numbers.
  • Automate recipes. Save a sequence of steps — such as OCR, metadata cleanup, page numbers and compression — as a recipe, try it with a dry run, and run it on many files.
  • Compare two PDFs. View two documents side by side with synchronized scrolling, and see text and visual differences.

More features

  • Edit PDF text

    Fix a typo, update a date or rewrite a paragraph in an existing PDF. Pagewright changes the words in the file itself and keeps the original layout wherever it can.

  • Organize pages

    Put pages in the right order, combine files into one, split a long document apart, and number every page — without uploading anything.

  • Annotate PDFs

    Review documents the way you would on paper — highlight, circle, point and comment — and keep every remark in one list.

  • Forms and signatures

    Fill in forms, sign them with your own handwriting or typed signature, and check the digital signatures on documents you receive.

  • OCR and conversion

    Turn scans into searchable documents, convert between images, text and PDF, and make files smaller — all on your own computer.
