OCR for scanned PDFs, conversion and compression
Turn scans into searchable documents, convert between images, text and PDF, and make files smaller — all on your own computer.
Make scanned pages searchable
A scanned page is only a picture of text. OCR → Recognize text reads the text in the picture and adds an invisible, searchable text layer aligned with it; the scan itself is not changed. After saving, you can search the document and select or copy its text.
- Runs on your computer. Recognition happens in Pagewright; nothing is uploaded.
- Languages. English is included. To recognize other languages, add a Tesseract language file (for example
fra.traineddata) with Add a language → Import file…, then tick the languages printed on your pages. - Check the results. Pagewright lists words it is unsure of and can outline them on the page so you can check them.
Accuracy depends on the scan. Clean, upright printed pages work best; handwriting, tables and badly degraded scans may not be recognized reliably. Turn sideways pages upright before running OCR.
Convert and export
- Images → PDF — combine PNG, JPEG and other images into a PDF, choosing order, margins, page size and orientation.
- Export images — save pages as PNG or JPEG at the resolution you choose.
- Export text — save a document's text as UTF-8, UTF-16 or a regional encoding for older programs.
- Contact sheet — print several pages on one sheet.
Compress
Choose a compression preset, compare the file size and image quality before and after, then save the smaller copy. Lossless settings never re-encode images.

More features
Edit PDF text
Fix a typo, update a date or rewrite a paragraph in an existing PDF. Pagewright changes the words in the file itself and keeps the original layout wherever it can.
Organize pages
Put pages in the right order, combine files into one, split a long document apart, and number every page — without uploading anything.
Annotate PDFs
Review documents the way you would on paper — highlight, circle, point and comment — and keep every remark in one list.
Forms and signatures
Fill in forms, sign them with your own handwriting or typed signature, and check the digital signatures on documents you receive.
Batch processing
Do the same job to a whole folder of PDFs in one go, with a report of what happened — and your original files left untouched.
